Dogs have three eyelids per eye, including the familiar upper and lower lids, plus a third eyelid, or nictitating membrane, located in the inner corner that sweeps across to protect, clean, and lubric lubricate the eye, producing a significant portion of tears. This extra membrane helps keep the eye healthy, though it's usually tucked away unless the dog is sleepy or has an issue like cherry eye (prolapsed gland).
